TCC Gives and Coburn Place have a special relationship, and it all started with a call. Luckily an employee for TCC, Detra who you met in the video, had a contact for us to start with! TCC Gives reached out to our pilot partners and asked if they would like to join us as we work on a program to supply survivors with smartphones and data service. They did say yes, and we went to meet them and found out we were giving them 50 phones they were in shock! The program, More Than a Phone, has since been tweaked with their help, to offer shelters plans for 25 phones with 4 months of service or 50 phones with 2 months of service.
At our meeting we took a tour, and upon asking learned they did not have wifi for them or for their clients and residents. We knew our program would not be as helpful without wifi, to help them get more use out of their devices. Detra began to get very involved and wanted to be the employee sponsor for a grant from TCC Gives. The whole IT team at TCC got involved in this project, a grant was approved for $10,000, and then an employee from TCC’s IT team connected Coburn Place with a friend of his that also gave time and equipment for this project! Coburn place didn’t think they could get wifi ever, and with a little help from their friends we were all able to make it happen! That’s why we believe we are #Bettertogether and why we say it’s “More Than a Phone!”
Detra also joined their board of directors and continues helping them with her time, talent, treasure and testimony. We also have others at TCC who have began to volunteer and donate to this awesome organization that supports our community members in need. We are glad we have a small place in the work they do!
